A LITTLE KNOW-HOW. A BETTER TRIP.
Get comfortable
with your RÛTE.
From the drive to work to the weekend away. Start with a short guide, then try it for yourself.
Daily Drive is free. Plus is optional.
Use Web Drive or a supported native app for free normal car navigation, voice, traffic, route recovery, saved places, local checklists, nearby weather and fuel searches. Guest Daily navigation needs no account, trial or payment card.
Plus adds Large vehicle/Towing routes, Planner itineraries, account rig/checklist libraries and advanced travel tools. Local checklists remain free. Supported native car displays have no separate Daily fee. iOS beta membership is not connected yet; available Plus features are included during beta. Compare features and prices.
Your first tripRead guide
Use RÛTE Planner for the big picture before you leave.
- Choose your driving mode. Use Daily for an ordinary car trip. Choose the appropriate larger-vehicle or towing setup when you need it.
- Choose a starting point and destination. Search for a place or address, then review the location on the map.
- Check the entrance. For a campground, business or large property, put the entrance pin where you actually drive in. A place marker in the middle of a property may not be its road entrance.
- Add your stops in travel order. Check that each stop is on the correct side of the road and that the entrance makes sense for your vehicle.
- Calculate and review the route. Compare available alternatives, look through the turns, and zoom in on unfamiliar approaches before saving.
Road data can miss restrictions, seasonal closures and difficult access. Review signs and conditions; a calculated route is not a guarantee that your rig will fit.
Load your tow setupRead guide
- In Planner, choose Towing and use Load Saved Tow Setup to choose a saved combination. Use the vehicle setup area to create or edit one.
- Give it a recognizable name, such as “Sierra + travel trailer,” and enter the actual dimensions and loaded weight requested.
- Before each trip, confirm that the selected setup matches what you are driving and towing today.
In Web Drive and Android Drive (build 130 onward), open the navigation menu, choose Rig & checklists, then Rig & trailer (Android: Rig and trailer setup). Older versions may label it Vehicle setup or My vehicle & trailer. Review your mode and setup before starting guidance. End guidance before changing vehicle setup. On the web, changing the selected setup clears a preview and requires a fresh route. Open Vehicle request & coverage in the web route review to see supplied and missing measurements; Android provides this in Towing turn analysis.
Vehicle requests are not clearance certification. Planner and Web Drive request selected height, width and actual loaded combination weight from Mapbox, including recalculated stops and recovery routes. Android Build 108 and later also request those measurements. Web requests reject returned restriction violations; an absence of violations does not establish complete road coverage. Missing measurements and incomplete provider data are not verified clearance. Length, axle loads and seasonal/local road access remain unverified. Review the selected setup and route before departure.
Read the height and low-bridge guide for setup steps, restriction warnings and the meaning of clearance markers.
What do bend and turn warnings mean?
Planner, Android Drive and Web Drive screen towing routes for pronounced road bends and maneuver concerns. Bends can occur without a turn instruction, and the two counts can overlap. Review the route before departure; these indicators do not measure turning room or certify that your vehicle fits.
An alternative may take longer while having fewer detected concerns. Automatic comparison requires complete setup inputs and comparable route data, and checks maneuver categories rather than just the total number of flags. The first route is not necessarily a towing recommendation. A displayed zero bend count does not prove the entire route was screened: missing or sparse geometry can prevent comparison. Review available alternatives and posted restrictions.
Will my vehicle setup appear on another device?
Save the setup to your account and sign in with the same account in Planner, Android Drive and Web Drive. Check that account sync has finished. Device-only setups stay local; Planner’s Copy browser setups to account can copy older browser saves.
Saved trips keep their own setup snapshots. After changing your saved rig measurements, select the updated setup in the trip and calculate a fresh route. Saving a rig and saving a trip are separate actions.
Set up directly in Drive: Open Rig and trailer setup to create or edit your vehicle and trailer without a Planner trip. Enter total length, trailer length when towing, height, width and optional actual loaded weight; additional measurements remain available. Choose account storage to share the setup across devices, or device storage for a local copy. Save and select the setup, then calculate and review a fresh route. If an older Web Drive version only offers saved setup selection, create or edit the setup in Planner.
Your height, low bridges & the routeRead guide
Your rig’s height is part of the route request in Planner, Web Drive and the Android Drive / Android Auto beta. Where the routing service has height restrictions, it can route around a low bridge before navigation starts. You can use this directly in Drive without creating a Planner trip.
- Select the setup you are using today. In Planner, choose Towing and Load Saved Tow Setup. In Drive, open Rig and trailer setup, save your measurements and select the setup. Daily driving does not use the saved towing dimensions.
- Enter the total height. Include rooftop equipment such as an air conditioner. Confirm the units and the tallest part of the complete setup; a missing height cannot be checked.
- Calculate and review a fresh route. The selected measurements accompany supported route requests, including requests for changed stops and recovery routes. After changing a setup, calculate again before starting.
What happens when the route conflicts with my height?
RÛTE rejects a route when the routing service reports a height-restriction violation. An eligible returned alternative may be used; if none is available, review the warning, your setup and another route before starting. Do not reduce the entered height to make a route pass.
Why did RÛTE choose a longer route?
A mapped height restriction can cause the routing service to choose another road. You may simply receive the route around it; a bridge-specific explanation is not yet available for every detour. A longer route can also have other causes, so the app should not attribute it to a particular bridge without evidence.
How do I switch to satellite view?
In Android Build 133 or later, open Map & voice → Map appearance → Map type and choose Road or Satellite, then Apply. Android Auto uses Map & voice → Map view → Map type and shares the phone’s choice. In Drive Web, use Map & settings → Map appearance → Map type. The view is remembered on your device or in this browser. Satellite includes road labels; changing the view keeps your selected trip. Imagery is not live and requires map data. The existing offline downloads do not include satellite imagery.
What do the numbers, P and U mean?
The optional clearance overlay in Planner, Web Drive and Android Build 133 or later (including Android Auto) shows reported road-height numbers where matching source records are available, P for a reported physical gap, and U = height unknown elsewhere. It is a view of visible map crossings, separate from the vehicle restrictions used when requesting a route. A U marker does not identify a verified low bridge or tell you whether your rig fits. Missing markers do not mean clear passage.
On Android, open Trip tools → Route review → Overpass indicators. In Android Auto, use Map & voice → Map view → Overpass indicators. The phone and car share this on/off setting. Zoom in to see available crossings.
Tap a numbered marker on the web, or open Crossing details in the Android overpass controls, for its road, directional values, source and dates. A physical gap is not the same as a legal height limit. Different directional values are separated by a slash.
These are community-reported OpenStreetMap attributes, not new surveys. The national source snapshot is refreshed regularly; expired or unavailable data falls back to unknown. Numbers do not certify that a route fits your rig and do not provide an independent approach warning. © OpenStreetMap contributors · ODbL. Current data snapshot.
A real example: Penny in Lansing
In our October 20, 2026 routing-service check, requests for a vehicle about 13 ft 1 in tall went around the South Pennsylvania Avenue railroad bridge in both directions. A shorter vehicle received the direct route.
That demonstrates height affecting route choice at this crossing. The check does not establish the provider’s exact bridge-height value or coverage at every bridge.
Restriction coverage is incomplete, including on local roads. Follow posted signs and conditions even when a route is returned. If you find a mismatch, stop safely and report the road, direction, selected rig height and app version through RÛTE support.
Save it. Then open it in Drive.Read guide
- Name your trip and save it. Check whether you are saving on this device or to your account.
- For account trips, sign in with the same account on both devices. Refresh saved trips if a recent change is missing.
- For Android, use Open on this Android phone on a saved account trip, or open Planner trips in the app. Web Drive also offers Planner trips in its navigation menu.
- Review the driving day and remaining stops, calculate a fresh route from your current position, and tap Start when ready.
Why isn’t my trip on my other device?
Browser/device saves stay on that device. Save the trip to your account for account access elsewhere, or use the available file export/import tools. Saving a trip does not transfer an active navigation session or live checklist progress.
How do Saved places sync?
Sign in to the same account on each device, then open Saved places. Use Refresh saved places if the account library needs another refresh. Device-only copies do not automatically appear on another device. If a save is pending or a conflict is shown, resolve it before switching accounts or clearing device data.
Saved places or entrance pins changed?
Existing trips keep their own copies of places. Review and update the trip itself if you changed an entrance in your saved places.
Find your way around DriveRead guide
Left navigation menu: choose Navigate for destinations, Planner trips and saved places; Rig & checklists for setup and preparation; Map & settings for web preferences. Trip tools: choose Stops, Fuel, Weather, Journey or Route tools. Android labels route review as Route review. Close panels to return to the map.
- Allow precise location and wait for a reliable GPS position.
- Choose a destination or saved trip, review the route and tap Start. Follow brings the map back to your location after you explore it.
- Use Trip tools to review stops or weather. Make changes while parked, or have a passenger handle supported phone controls.
- At a stop, review Arrival options and continue when ready. Review each later saved driving day before starting it.
Using Android Auto
Set up your trip on the Android phone while parked, connect the phone to your vehicle’s Android Auto, then open RÛTE on the car display. The native phone app and Android Auto share the navigation session. Car controls follow Android Auto’s availability rules; some reviews and stop changes belong on the phone.
Web Drive does not project to Android Auto. Android app availability depends on the release or testing access you have.
Using Web Drive
Open rute.life/drive, allow precise location and keep the page visible for guidance. Browser voice and screen-awake behavior depend on your device. Web Drive has manual Recover route, rather than automatic rerouting, and cannot provide offline navigation.
Traffic colors and route changes
Turn on the Traffic overlay to see available congestion colors and its legend. Uncolored roads mean traffic is unknown. The overlay does not itself choose a faster route or promise automatic delay avoidance.
Make the most of trip toolsRead guide
Find fuel, rest areas and other stops
Open Trip tools → Find a stop (or Find fuel). During guidance, search Ahead along your route or Nearby. Ahead searches sections before the next planned stop; use Search next 50 miles when offered.
Review added miles and driving time before confirming. Search results do not verify hours, services or room for a trailer. Check the entrance and exit before committing.
Weather, wind and alerts
Planner has weather and wind tools for trip review. In Drive, use Weather near you or Wind near you for local conditions, and Weather ahead during guidance for sampled forecast areas along the upcoming route.
Load current alerts separately and read the source time and instructions. These are sampled US forecasts and alerts, not continuous radar or automatic background warnings.
Fuel estimates
Before leaving, review Departure fuel estimate for that day and vehicle. During guidance, Fuel remaining accepts your current range or total fuel and expected consumption.
After refueling, enter the new total or range. These are manual estimates, not readings from your fuel tank; changing routes or losing reliable progress can clear them.
Departure and arrival checklists
Create departure checklists in Planner or Android Drive. Web Drive loads the checklist assigned to a saved Planner trip; it does not yet create a standalone departure list. Review tires, connections, secured cargo and your own trip-specific items before you leave. The arrival checklist is separate; start fresh at each stop. Do not assume checkmarks sync between devices.
Community road reports · private pilot
Open community reports while parked. This feature is available only when the deployment and your account are enabled for the pilot. Review a map pin, enter a road name, category and observation time, then submit privately for moderation. Shared observations remain unverified and expire after 30 days; they do not change routing. Missing reports are not an all-clear. Flag a concern with a reason, or open My submissions to delete your own report. Shared reviews require a refresh after five minutes. Android’s phone app provides Community reports directly for enabled accounts. Choose a report area or use Near my route after previewing a route. Near my route shows observations within one mile of the route geometry; a nearby pin may belong to a different road. Filtered pages can be empty even when another page has matches, so use Next page when available. My submissions remains unfiltered. There is no Android Auto reporting screen.
Where is a stop relative to my route?
On supported Android builds, Ahead results and the selected stop review can show the nearest route point as approximately ahead, behind you or near your current position. The separate distance from the route is a straight-line estimate, not the driving distance to the entrance.
Nearby search results may only show approximate distance away until you select a place. Open its review for route position and added driving time and miles. Position can be unavailable on ambiguous or changed routes. These labels do not confirm the correct side of the road, an exit or trailer access.
National Forest road review
Look up an exact road number in Hiawatha or Ottawa to review official MVUM segment designations, source season text and geometry. Android opens this web review while parked; Planner and Drive Web link to it from their menus. Internet is required. No current-closure or towing-clearance decision is made, and routes are not changed. In Planner, open the selected route’s Route details → Road overview to compare a known forest road with a supported single-day route. The sketch and approximate straight-line separation do not establish that the route uses that road: lines may cross at bridges or run beside each other. Unsupported geometry says comparison is unavailable. Check the linked official maps and alerts. Missing records and road update dates remain unknown; seasonal and local coverage is incomplete.
Offline readiness and downloads
Open Offline readiness in Drive to review what is saved locally. Saved trips are not downloaded maps. Web Drive needs connectivity for navigation services.
Android’s Offline readiness → Offline downloads offers smaller Sault Ste. Marie, Marquette and Sault–Marquette areas, plus Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Review the selected rectangular bounds and size estimate before downloading. Last successful download time is recorded on the phone; it is not a road-data update date. New offline routes with supplied vehicle dimensions remain blocked because enforcement is unverified. Seasonal/local coverage, length and axle limits remain incomplete. Keep the download panel open on unmetered internet while parked. These tools are still an early foundation; a download or saved plan does not certify complete offline routing. Verify your specific trip and device before relying on it beyond coverage, and carry a backup plan.
When something doesn’t look rightRead guide
The map can’t find me, or the marker jumps
Check precise location permission, move to a place with a clear view of the sky and wait for a fresh fix. In Web Drive, keep the page visible and use Request precise location in Map appearance. If the position is uncertain, stop safely before following further instructions.
I moved after previewing a route
Calculate a fresh preview from your current position, review it and tap Start. A saved preview is not intended to start from a different location.
I left the route or reopened the app
Use Trip tools → Recover route when available to review a new route through remaining stops, then explicitly apply it. After an interruption, reopen the saved trip or interrupted-trip reminder, review the remaining stops and calculate a fresh route. Live guidance is not automatically restored.
A road or campground entrance looks wrong
Do not continue onto an unsuitable road just to follow the line. Stop safely and review an alternative. Check the entrance pin in Planner. For an issue report, include the place, road, direction of travel and a screenshot if possible.
Android location, telemetry and phone storage
On Android Build 124 and later, open Navigation → Account & help → Privacy & data while parked for the policy. Location can be used while the map is open, and active guidance can continue when you switch apps or use Android Auto. End navigation when finished; manage location permission in Android Settings. While parked, the phone map’s information (i) control beside Mapbox provides attribution and telemetry choices.
Signing out does not erase saved phone data or close your cloud account. Build 124 system backups and Android phone-to-phone transfers keep only guidance voice and volume preferences. Save guest content to your account or export it before replacing or resetting your phone. Read Android privacy and storage details before clearing storage or requesting account deletion.
Request account deletion
Open account-deletion instructions even if you cannot sign in. Android’s Account & Planner trips → Request account deletion also shows instructions and lets you copy a blank request template. Send the request yourself; copying a template or opening an email draft does not send it or delete anything. Support verifies ownership before processing removal.
